What Is It About Wheat?

Ever since my daughter had success resolving her food allergy issues, I am forever focused on healthy immune systems and well-functioning microbiomes. In doing so, I was recently recognized by Feedspot.com as one of the Top 40 Food Allergy Blogs and Websites on The Web!

Questions about healthy immune systems constantly include the topic of wheat. Michelle said it affects her stomach and Jacque wants to know why he can eat certain foods but not others without having trouble. Neither of these clients has celiac disease or wheat allergy, yet both are completely boggled as to why it’s affecting their digestion.

Why is wheat such an issue?

For one, alarming levels of glyphosate are found in so many of our foods and in our environment. Recent studies show that harm from this heavily used weed killer can begin at ultra-low levels. Residues of this toxic chemical are causing harm to our health by killing beneficial microorganisms in our gut. This creates a harmful imbalance in our gut flora which can lead to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

A second reason for gut issues from wheat is that 80% of the processed foods in our supermarkets come from genetically modified foods (GMO’s) which are also prominent in our food supply. The trouble is that these GMO’s contain Gliadin, a protein found in wheat that disrupts our intestinal barriers, allowing foreign substances to enter our bloodstream and eventually causing a variety of autoimmune diseases.

A recent article in Natural Medicine Journal states that changing the microbiome may suppress harmful species and allow a healthy microbiome to heal. It references the restriction of a Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and others including Paleo, low-FODMAP, and GAPS diet. The children in the study with Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) had much improved results.

How to Heal Yourself…

Removing harmful foods such as wheat, barley, corn and rice from your diet is the first step. Make it a point to eat only organic, non-GMO foods. Add more nut flours such as almond and coconut to make breads and baked goods, while increasing fermented foods such as fermented yogurts.
